Portable Buddy fitting damage?

I used my new Mr. Heater portable buddy today for the first time . I also have a 2 year old one . I noticed the new one does not have a molded plastic shield around the tank fitting like my older one does . The stem is exposed and I think could get easliy damaged as it is bounced around in the otter. I supposed they did this to make screwing the cylinder on easier. My question is has anybody damaged theirs in that spot or bent it and made the fitting leak ?

I have had my Buddy for a few years and at least 30 trips. Never had a single problem even though I haven't exactly been careful about screwing the propane canister on.
