4 stroke oil

tinski

Question

I just got my first boat (it's used, but can't wait to get out) and it has a 60 horse envinrude 4 stroke. The manual suggested using either the envinrude/johnson ultra 4 stroke crankcase oil or SAE 10W-40SG. Does anyone know if it makes a difference what oil I use? Also how often should I change the crankcase oil and filter?

Thanks much!
Tinski

I don't know the difference in the definition. I change my oil about twice a year because I use my 4 stroke from April til November. It gets a lot of use duck hunting.

I've been using SAE 10W-30 summer and 5W-30 in the fall in my Honda 15. Regular automobile oil.
My Johnson 2 stroke outboard recommends using their brand TCW-3 oil, but I don't anymore. Why pay more for a similar product? My motors run great either way.
