fishlips
I have a 1999 9.9HP Johnson outboard (longshaft). its been awhile since I've changed an impeller. The lower unit has 2 areas where it can be taken apart by pulling 4 bolts. It can be pulled apart about midway down or it can be pulled apart just above the gears ~ I'm assuing that I want to pull the lower unit apart just above the gears. Anyone have any input on this motor and the steps involved? Advice appreciated.
Heartman
Fishlips, your assumption is correct. The impeller housing will be right on top of the lower unit. Go for it - all is good.
fishlips
Thanks for the help...do you think there will be any shift linkages down there on that small of a motor?
Heartman
Nope to the linkage question. Drop off lower unit, unscrew impeller cover, slide old impeller off, slide new impeller on with key correctly positioned, a bit of grease on impeller fins, spin as you put impeller cover back on, replace lower unit engaging driveshaft gears correctly, tighten bolts and you're done! You'll be able to put fires out now!!!
