Potato Tower

I recently read that by using a Potato Tower, a person can increase yield without increasing the growing surface area. It is done by planting a potato in a suitable container and adding soil to the container as the plant emerges from the surface of the soil. basically the growing leaves become sprouts for new potatoes.

Has anyone ever used this method to grow potatoes? Did it work?

Works well if you have limited space. I've seen it done with old tires.
