Reconditioned Marcum?

Has anyone bought one of these units? Were they returns that people weren't happy with? Trade ins? And if you bought one were you happy with it?

I'm wondering because it would be a good way to upgrade from my VX1 at a pretty good savings. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with the VX1 but I need a second one for my wife and the LX3 or LX5 would be another nice toy to have. grin.gif

Over the years, I've bought three Vex's that were reconditioned and no problems. I would imagine that Marcum takes the same care with theirs. I was told by the servicemen that they are fixed and then inspected even more closely than the factory inspection. Then they come with a full warranty. And a discounted price. You can't beat that deal.

I haven't used them, but I've heard nothing but good from Vex. If they recondition and you buy from the factory with a warrenty, you should be good to go. I haven't heard anything bad about service from either company.

When I was looking to buy a FL20 direct from Vexilar I was talking to them about the reconditioned units. He said that most of them are end of the season returns from the big retailers, and they check them over, check the battery, etc.

It could be the case with Marcum as well.

If you are buying it from MarCum, I would have no problems with buying it at all. My guess is if MarCum is going to sell it as a reconditioned, they have done everything they can to make it as good as a new unit.

My guess is they were ones that were returned, and they sent a new unit to the cust and then took time to fix it right. But that is only a guess.

Enjoy the new upgrade!~

Thanks everyone!!! I was looking for end of season clearouts on them but didn't find any, most places are just out of them. Looks like reconditioned is the route to go if I want to upgrade for a reasonable price.

I would not hesitate to buy a reconditioned unit. Both companies stand behind their products so should not have any hassels with getting a defective recon fixed as good as new. Great way to save some $$.

Note if it is an LX-3, you may want to clarify if it has the True Color upgrade or not. You will want the upgrade.

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
