Transom strength

lawman

Question

I own a 17'11' 2001 model Alumacraft console boat. I have a 115HP suzuki 4-stroke engine. I am thinking of adding a 9.0hp kicker to my rig but wonder if the transom is meant to hold the additional weight. When I bought the boat the dealer told me the boat was only rated for the 115 Suzuki, no more. His opinion was based on weight. Any opinions on whether or not I should do this?

Never heard of a boat manufacturer recommending a motor based on weight. The Suzuki 115 is the lightest 115 on the market last time I checked but that shouldn't have anything to do with how you rig your boat. I can't see how adding a kicker would be a problem. I run the same 115 and do not have any use for a kicker, are you looking to save a little gas or why the addition?
