tip-ups with a ice rod

fisher

Recommended Posts

me and some people from work have been trying to find a tip-up that has the rod with it. we sow one last year that set the hook when the fish took it but have not been able to find it.

has anyone ever used one of these tip-ups with the rod and can you help me find a good one.

I think it would be alot more fun to reel in the northern then have to hand over hand!

we hope you can help thanks

There are a couple different models out there that hold a rod, but don't set the hook. Of course I can't remember the name of either of them right now.

I have to agree. That was the reason I wanted to try one.

until I set the bail and set the hook.

That is the key phrase that make what you have legal.

If you are fishing with anything remotely like the image below, this is illegal in the state of Minnesota. The DNR considers the use of a device like this as a form of impaling a fish, which is illegal to do in the state of MN. I had a co-worker who bought like 6 of these things this last fall for his family off of e-bay. They are like $30-$40 each. He is out a lot of ching. The question he had the other day was could he use them if the rod was not set in the ready position, at least use them as fancy rod holders. We will call DNR once again. grin.gif

If you have any question on what you are using, please call the MN DNR office.

Are you talking about the arctic fisherman from Clam?

That was one of them. I looked at these last year and wasn't impressed.

There is another brand that I could only get by ordering through they're web site. I really liked them, in fact I sent them an email inquiring whether a bait caster would work because all the tip ups they showed on the site had spinning reels in them.

I'm having a brain fart.crazy.gif

Bingo. It turns any rod/reel into a tip-up that you can jig. Great product. I'd post a link but for some reason that is not encouraged here.

shack, that is not what I was talking about, looks like you need an engineering (non choo-choo) degree to make that other one work. The arctic fisherman works really well, but you have to tend the hole and make sure it doesn't freeze shut on you....

I figured as such, when you said "you set the hook". But, I think you answered a question people have been asking for a couple months now. That question has been brought about where one could get a tip-up with a rod and reel on it and it still would be legal in MN.

I figure a post like this is a good thing this time of year. With all the internet shopping that goes on now and the big box stores carrying the same things from state to state, you never know what you get at Christmas that could be illegal. I can picture Grandma searching the internet for the latest and great’s new fishing item for JR... Buying it, wrapping it and giving it to him on Christmas. Then JR. uses this new thing from grandma on a Metro lake during New Years weekend and gets a hefty fine and a ticket from local DNR/CO.

I wonder how many Automatic fisherman where under the tree in MN this year and I wonder how many will be used this weekend on MN lakes smirk.gif?

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
