Train Dogs to FInd Sheds

I am wondering if anyone has trained their dogs to find deer sheds. I am wondering if it would cause him to chase deer while pheasant hunting or if the antlers are a different smell to him all together.

Any help would be good.

Thanks. He is a 7 month Black lab with a great nose. Just looking for more time for him to be out in the woods at work.

I have a 7mo. GWP that I am hoping will find sheds. I have several small racks that I use for retrieving training. She is very good at finding them and she is very interested in some of the racks I have in the house. If she will find them out in the woods is a good question. Is it my scent on the antler that she looks for? On a walk, I found a deer jaw bone in the leaves that she ran right over. Once I picked it up she was interested and carried it for quite a while. The real test will be finding a shed in the woods without my scent on it. I hope I can spot it first and get the dog to discover it by herself.

I am not worried the shed training will make her chase deer. I worry that something big and hairy running away from her will entice her to chase. That's why she wears that fancy collar with the blinking light.

Good Luck

I heard about a guy that did it in Canada. He just kept giving the dog treats. He figured it was keying in on bones. It would bring sheds and an occasional bone here and there.

If I remember right the guy said the dog found some monster sheds though.

There are lots of guys trying it...Just google it to see.
