Shallow well pump recommendation

Recommended Posts

I need to buy a new shallow well pump and Tank for the in-laws cabin. I put in a new sand point 23 feet deep and have good water supply . Does anyone have any opinions on what brand and size of pump to buy , 1/2, 3/4 or 1 h.p. and tank size , would be running water for toilet , bathroom sink and kitchen faucet.hopefully shower in near future . any input is appreciated.

for a cabin, you don't need much. My hobby farm runs on a 1/2 hp pump. my tank is average to small. this is on a 200 foot well. as long as your tank is good, you should be fine. there is a switch you can install also that keeps the pump running as long as you're running water. this would be for a smaller tank without the reserve. this cuts down on the pump starting/stopping all the time.

Ryan v you must have a deep well pump then , is this switch available for a shallow well? I just got back from looking at them seems there a 4 major brands; wayne , red lion, simmer, and flotec. any only 2 differennt electrical motors used on them either a g.e. or a.o. smith , seems to be the g.e. are on the more expensive ones . one neighbor at the lake has a 3/4 hp simmer and had problems with it until he put it by the lake , he draws lake water . the other neighbor also draws from the lake has a 1/2 hp , don't know brand and his is further back on shore and he has no problems ????

!/2 hp is fine. Those brands you mentioned are box store brands, you kind a get what you pay for there. If you want a higher quality pump, buy one through your plumber. I would recomend a Gould.

not sure if you can get that switch for your well. As also stated, I'd go to a plumber or a well driller for a good pump. they'd be able to answer questions too.

I'd go 3/4 HP less work on the motor,Make sure the lift rating is sufficent.Try Harbor Freight! Good motors and prices, you can also get pressure tank there, for your service needs get a smaller one.get a 30-50 pressure switch you dont need any more! These recommendations also take into consideration the need to upgrade at a later time! cool.gifI'd also install a whole house filter after the pressure tank with the cheaper paper filter. grin.gif

Thanks for all your input guys , I'll have to do some more shopping. I didn't realize there are so many brands of pumps and brands of tanks . Some tanks have mounts some don't . Seems like all tanks are to small (6 gallon) or to big (14 gallon ) . Some pumps are sold with 8.5 gallon tanks already plumed . and some of the pumps need power cords wired in .I guess it's a matter of how much you want to pay and how work you want to do to get it ready.
