poor grass growth,,,

I've got a birch tree that has real poor grass growth underneath and all around it. Probably about 20 -25 feet in diameter. Any ideas how to get some grass to flourish underneath it?

Does the area around the tree get sun? If not, trim the tree up to allow sun in the area you want grass to grow.
