what is the difference between an lcx 18c and an lcx 20c

I have a chance to buy both at a decent price, just curious which is better.

I have both. there is not much difference between them. the LCX 20 replaced the lcx 18. the main difference is the lcx is nmea 0183 with grey connectors and the lcx 20 is nmea 2000 with blue connectors.

If you ever intend on having a new Hummingbird 997 with sidefinder and hooking them together then the lcx 18 is a better choice because the 997 still uses the nmea 0183 protocol.

A 20 you will be able to network plus as mentioned it is newer.. A 18 won't allow that and it is an older unit
