Any good rabbit and deer deterents out there?

About 2 years ago I planted 3 bare root apple trees in my yard. Needless to say, it wasn't long before the rabbits ate around the base of the trees and all my trees died. Well, I've taken the challenge on again. I planted three apple trees in my yard. I've put up a fence barrier around each one, but wonder if there is anything more I can do to keep the rabbits and deer away. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also, if anyone can recommend a good reference book on apple trees I'd really appreciate that as well.

Human Hair will keep the deer away I'm not sure about the Rabbits.
