Umbrella Rig

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering if any of you have used an Umbrella Rig to troll for Walleye, Pike, or Muskie. An Umbrella Rig allows you to pull a number of lures (or plastics without hooks to keep things legal) to simulate a school of bait fish and then have one, poor lure trailing the school (he, he, he, with trebles). Offshore folk's use this kind of setup all the time, I was wondering if anyone had tried this in fresh water. I'm thinking of running two of these rigs off the boat and then run two 12" pike lures 20' in back of them. I figure that Mr. Muskie might see the school of baitfish (and one tasty one trailing) being followed by some small pike and decide to go on a feed. Thoughts?

seen this done quite a few times for giant stripers in the southeast. worked quite well in fresh water. wanted to try it for myself but couldnt quite tell if it was legal or not in minnesota. im sure it would work wonders in summer when searching for big pike over deep basins. good luck and let me know if the CP thinks youre illegal.

It shouldn't be illegal. I'm planning on using 4" or 6" perch colored plastic bodies attached with mono, no hooks. The only thing with a hook in it will be the lonely fellow trailing in back, so one artificial lure.
