Minnesota river question

Katman

Recommended Posts

SPOT: off 35w Black Dog Rd.

Under the 35w bridge, to the right there is a little creek that runs from what I believe the Black Dog Wildlife Preserve Park. That creek runs into the Minnesota river being blocked by a little dam.

You guys following me here? There is a pretty deep hole right out from this dam. Has anyone ever caught anything good out here? I've seen a few 20+lbs from here but has anyone had first hand experience here? This is straight out from the little dam and down river a bit. Anyone? confused.gif

I have caught Flats and Channels from that spot. Even the discharge down by 77(cedar ave.)

I haven't caught any big Flats to brag about from there though.(nothing over 20lbs.) I got a lot of nice channels in the past few years from those areas. I heard of Flatheads up to the 40lb range being caught from Blackdog spots this year.Unfortunately I am not one of them to pull a trophy sized Flat out of there, yet...

Thats what some guys been telling me. 40lbs and 50lbs from the blackdog location. I was just wondering if this was true. I've yet to see a flathead from here. But then again..I'm a channel guy. But i've gotten recent reports from good sources that the cats are biting ontop of the dam at that blackdog park. Maybe I'll give it a try tonight.

my last few outings to Blackdog hasn't produced much. One Flathead around 30'' caught on a bullhead, a few channels caught on cut bait and nightcrawlers ranging from 3 to 8lbs. There is a lot of gizzard shad in the water over there right now.

I did go out last night...but not to the dam at blackdog park. I went to the littl electric pump/dam on the minnesota right next to blackdog. There was shad everywhere. Lots of ppl fishing but I didn't see anything other then sheepheads. That spot was SNAGS GALORE! It was a very deep hole though...I'd say mayb 40+ft or so. I got one good run.....landed that guy in the snag...and goodbye! I'm off to Hudson today....I'm trying this walleye thing for a bit. But if I can sway my buddie to give blackdog another try, I'll report back again! It looked very promising...But we left at 9pm....no more weights for the fast current and bug spray. Prime time was just getting started.

40ft for real?!?!?!

Were you in a boat with a depth finder or shore? I spend alot of time on that strech by boat and never seen a hole that deep with the water levels where they are at now. Not to say that there isnt one there.

I'm gonna have to take a closer look. After all the time I've been pounding 35w to the confluence. I know of 4-6 spots over 25ft. Now that I'm thinking, I dont know if I've ever seen a forty foot hole south of 35W on the MN when the river is this low.

thanks

Larry

OK. It was more like 20+/- or so. we went again later last night....but when we got there....we noticed that we were packing light. No tackle boxes that is. Left them at home while having dinner. What MORONS! So we took the boat out to check the depth look for fish. There are some activity there on the fishfinder....but my only cast ended up in a snag...AGAIN mad.gif No tackle, no fish. So that was the end of our night. We made it to hudson prior. There was lots of action.....turns out that the buggers that was taking my cut shad were sheepheads. Got a one good run, which I thought was a cat, but then about 20 seconds into it....it stop fighting. Turns out to be a large 20in sheephead. My night was a mess. Maybe tonight will be better. Prescott...here we come. Anyone going out to Prescott tonight? I got a buddy some beers coming along with me.

hahah...sorry for the wrong info. Judging depth from shore is horrible. As soon as I read your post...I was questioning myself. That was way too deep for this time of year. So we went back (on boat this time) and sure enough....around the 20s. I believe there are concret blocks down there. Very uneasy bottom...and very snaggy. Rock snags feel a bit different from these. Upstream just a bit by the bridge is another hole....and coming from shore..you can see all the concret blocks. A great place to test out the power of your rod and line wink.gif
