No one will notice you at 2 am on the stern with yer trollin rod except the other guys with the same idea. Casting off of the bow may get you noticed though. Have a fun cruise. I'm gettin jealous. grin.gif

I took a cruise up to Alaska last summer and found a small pond that a small stream runs through in Sitka that you can shore fish. There were hundreds of pink and chum salmon in there that would willingly hit a spoon. I had brought with a pack rod and some tackle with me, and it worked great. The pond is located near the railroad tracks behind the marina there. There are also some great flyfishing lakes if you can handle the hike up the side of the mountain, about 2-3 miles. Just watch out for bears, not kidding. You can pick up a fishing license in town at the hardware store on mainstreet. I wish I could have spent more time there, it was a fun town.

You might be able to rent some gear at the hardware/tackle shop. I just have one of the cheaper ugly stick rods that breaks down into 3 or 4 pieces. It was only $20 I think, and just brought a small tackle box with some spoons and jigs and stuff. I found a number of areas that could be fished in the ports that we stopped at. I was glad to have my own gear. We also went up to Denali National Park and there are spots to fish grayling there, and also up in Fairbanks I did a grayling float fishing trip. I was glad to have some of my own gear and be able to fish whenever and wherever I could. The pack rod was easily put into the suitcase and the airlines or the cruiseship never said a thing about the hooks and lures.

It was about a 10 minute walk. If you follow the stream up that goes into the pond, you'll come to where the trails are that lead up to the alpine/mountain lakes that you can fish also, that's quite a hike up the mountain-it'll take a good hour to get up there.

Just use some small rapalas or small Mepps spinners. They don't see that many lures up on those lakes up there. The salmon in the pond area will hit spoons, or else you'll snag them with the spoon.

Sitka is on the west side of Baranof Island, total length of the road system is 13 miles end to end. Mountains one one side of town, ocean on the other. I've been end to end a few times. There's no railroad tracks there. maybe you are thinking of a different town.

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
