mplspug
For Father's Day my daughter actually said she wants to go fishing with me. I am looking at the St. Paul area as I want to hit deep holes with current because most of the fishing will be mid afternoon to dusk.I am going to scout Raspberry island and Harriet island, can anyone give me a heads up before going? If I can't fish there, I will be hitting Lambert's landing or South St. Paul. Lambert's has a lot of snags and SSP is further, so I am hoping one of the islands will provide good shore fishing. Thanks in advance if anyone has info. If anyone wants to meet down there some where, PM me.
Katman
Lambert's landing is an awesome spot. I've caught plenty of cats there. Theres a nice drop off at beginning of the landing. Start at upstream of the landing and work down. Cut bait works very well. This hole is pretty deep...and if you bring kids....put a life jacket on them. I've seen very nice 20+ pound flats from this spot. Give it a shot....let us know how it goes.
ChemE
You never know what you'll catch off the Harriet public pier. I've pulled in several 25" walleyes followed up with many 15 lb carp. The channel cats there have a wide range of sizes and the sheephead will usually keep you skunk free. Pretty much everything can be caught with crawlers. A restaraunt and restroom are close by too. Since my daughter will be with, I'll have crawlers or leeches on hers and a bullhead for me. As for Lambert's, I fished there real early with bullies and the water was up and fast. I fished on the downstream part of the retaining wall right before the rip rap. I had at least one bite, maybe 2 more. However each time I ended up snagged. I was thinking of fishing on the rap closer to the barge tie downs. Can you tell me anything about that area? I have heard of the hole at the begining of it, but I am not sure where that is. Can you point it out on here? I have someletters on there for reference. A. Is where I got bites, but snagged as well. B. Where I thought I might try C. Is this where the hole is? D. Nice, deep looking slack water here that looks like it would be nice to fish. However, I don't know if even my net could scoop one up from there. From a distance, that wall looks pretty high. By the way my daughter is 13, so I should be ok. No way I would bring a little tike down there! Thanks for any info, it helps!
Katman
wow...I'm almost lost! hahah. I've never seen a satalite picture of that place. But the hole is pretty big. Its the furthest upstream you can go. If I'm not mistaken..that would be by D. You'll notice the difference once you've cast out a line. There is a good current there. And bring something the sit on....like a cooler full of beers! One thing I want to promote now is.....and I've never been a fan until really recently. I've never caught anything off of the Berkley power baits for cats, but last week when I was by the dam by Minnehaha falls, my friends told me to try that bait. So I hooked a big fathead on the hook with that stinky dough bait right over it. It could of just been luck but 3 cast in a row, 3 15ish pound cats in a row. I don't know what it was...but It was awesome fights on my bass rod..hahahha. Worth a try...if you have the time. But enjoy! Oh yeah...I know a few people that lost a rod or two there...you might want to hold it or watch it carefully. Cause there...YOU'LL NEVER KNOW! GOOD LUCK! mplspug
To follow up, boy did this place look different with the water down 3 or 4 feet. I had no idea the rock size at A and B and it drops nearly straight down there. Many snags. I believe from C to A there is shallower water and a nice ledge at A. I trie A and was suprised nothing was sitting under that current break. I think this is a good spot when the water is high. Had I known what it was like early in the year when the water was up when I fished it, I would have just dropped my line straight down at A. I think I gave up on Raspberry too quick. I think you can get some nice flatheads on that sand bar at night. But I had a pole for my daughter that wasn't active, so that's why I moved. raspberry is a neat little spot though. I might have to give the peir a shot too.
