Lab's ears got infected?

I've had my yellow lab female for a little over 3 years and she absolutely loves the water. So far she hasn't had any trouble with water in her ears, that is till last Tuesday. I was going bass fishing so I brought her along to get a little training session in. We do our training session, fish a few hours, and head home. I bring her to the vet on Friday and her ears are infected? Why now all of a sudden, when she's had no ear problems what so ever in the first 3 years of her life? I'm a first time dog owner, so I don't have any experience with stuff like this. Any thoughts?
