Dave,

I'm not sure if you remember me, but you showed me the ropes on channels in the Floodwood area a few years ago. Now I've got a small duck boat and motor and will be able to expand my opportunities on the St. Louis. Any recommendations for me on spots to try w/ the boat? I know where the carry down landing is north of town off of 73, should a guy head north or south of there? Any help would be great! It seems everything up here usually runs about 2 weeks behind the spring happenings in the Cities. Think end of this month would be too early to start exploring?

Brian.. yes I remember you.

Things have already been happening here for quite a while. I think your right on the fish turning on soon if your weather has been decent.

The cty 8 access has plenty of deeper water around and there are lots of cats in that stretch. It can also be decent running upstream to the whiteface river, but not neccessary. Try to target deeper, slower moving water, or any inlet that may be dumping in warmer water, or areas to concentrate the baitfish. Or.. if it looks fishy, fish it. There are many areas in that river with shallow runs and staggered deep holes(10'-15'). Any of these holes can hold fish right now. Anchor ahead of the hole and toss back to them.

There are tons of cats in that stretch. If you find the food, you will have cats somewhere close. I wish I could help you with some exact locations... but there are not many landmarks up that way! You dont have to go far in either direction from the access.

A couple rainbow chubs torn in half are a great go-to bait there. Bring a long rope and drag your boat up the shore at the access if you have 4wd.. that hill can be a little greasy so be careful launching and loading.

Good luck.

Hey Dave,

Thanks for the info. I'm thinking of giving it a shot this coming Thursday after I drop my kid's off with the x. Have you ever fished from shore up by the County 8 access? I'd be more comfortable on the river with another person in the boat as I'm not familiar with it. Maybe I can talk my buddy from Hibbing into meeting me down there.

Thanks,

Brian

I dont think you are going to want to launch there solo.

Shorefishing can be good up there. It can have a pretty good current, bring some weights. Night fishing is usually the best.. but its still worth a shot. At least the mosquitos shouldnt be out yet.. wood ticks?
