PICKLED EGGS

Recommended Posts

I tried making them myself a couple times with mixed results. You can't beat Sherer's Pickled Eggs. Anyone know where you can get the industrial sized jars of these like they have in bars? They've been getting harder to find in stores like Cub, Rainbow, ect.

I came across this recipe(might've been in this forum somewhere)a while ago. I have not had time to make it but it sure sounded good. I would guess that you would leave the eggs a week and a half or two weeks before you eat them. If you try it, please post your results.

Pickled Eggs

Four cups apple cider vinegar or tarragon vinegar (tarragon is best)

Four cups water

Eight tbl. spoons sugar

Five tsp. salt

Three tsp. celery salt

Six garlic cloves, chopped

10 Bay leaves

12 whole dry red peppers

30 whole black peppercorns

20 whole allspice

Three dozen eggs

Onions

Simmer all ingredients a half hour.

Cook eggs, cool and peel. Use a toothpick to poke holes in the eggs end-to-end and side-to-side. Remove toothpick.

Place one layer of the eggs in a gallon jar. Add a layer of onion, more eggs, etc... until the jar is full.

Pour warm brine over the eggs. Cover them and store in a refrigerator.

Yup, those eggs can be powerful. laugh.gif A few years ago we had a jar of them on a Mille Lacs launch. On the trip out we'd walk to the front of the launch and open the jar. Had front to ourselves after that.

Well I tried one of the eggs tonight. They were'nt what i expected. They were kinda nasty. the color was good. but the taste just wasn't. Maybe I'll have to head back up to Fargo were the local watering hole I used to frequent used to have the BEST. The old memories is what made me think of trying it myself.

Maybe its in the eggs. Maybe its the wifes vengence that I can not find them, its the blanket party that worries her>>>>later the load

I made a batch (three jars) ayear and a half ago. Tried the first jar about 2 weeks after making them and they were just OK. The next 2 jars were takin to the annual Canada fishing trip about a year after I made them and they were alot better. Maybe they just need to ferment for a while?

Here is another recipe to try!

2 cups of vinegar

2 cups of cold water

1 Tbsp. canning salt

1 Tbsp. sugar (optional)

2 Tsp. pickling spice

1 Tsp. garlic powder

1 jar yellow chilli peppers(hot)

2 dozen eggs

3 bay leaves

Once eggs are boiled, place in cold water, easier to peel.

Add all ingredients together. If need more brine, add

more vinegar. Place in fridge. Ready in about 1 week.

Plus, add the whole jar of peppers, don't strain.

Never had a bad batch!

Ya, I got hooked on pickled eggs a few years ago on Mille lacs. A buddy from work makes them at home, and they are real good!! Every time I ice fish with him, he brings a jar. It's tradion now!!

His recipe is real simple.

dozen eggs

onions

pickling seasoning

white vinager

boil eggs, shell eggs, boil vinager, add about 10 eggs(size of jar)to the jar, pour vinager in jar and onions and seasoning, let sit for 1 or 2 days, the longer they sit the stronger they get so it depends on your taste.

Bon Appetite!!!

    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
