Rattle Reels

Has anybody found any rattle reels that they really like?

I have used the cheap red plastic kind for a couple years and every year I have to replace them because they get overtighened or somehow become lopsided...

I'd like to try the large wooden kind but they seem so bulky and just not loud enough. Any suggestions would be great.

Hey der and welcome to FM. I don't use rattle reels all that often these days but I know what you mean about those plastic ones cracking and breaking on you. You mention wooden ones, not sure just what type of wooden ones to which you refer, but there are wooden cage ones with cat bell kinda dealy bobs in them and they make some racket, and I would think that they would hold up better than those plastic ones.

Have yourself a great winter season.

thanks Fisky

Ya the wooden ones with the cage and the bell are the others I have seen.

The only thing I can see wrong with those right away is that they are just huge. One half way tall guy could easily bump them off if they're hanging from the ceiling. Seen it happen with even the plastic ones after a late night.

I hear you, reckon it'd depend on how tall one is and how short ones ceiling's are in there hut! One benefit is when you wanna reel up that large spool takes up line alot faster than the plastic versions, spose a guy only does this at the end of the day as you hand over hand them otherwise when pullin fishes eh! Iffin you are handy and have tools you could make your own maybe with scrap plywood and dowel to whatever dimensions you'd favor, save a few beans as well!

I'd go with the Lewandowski's or Lindells. They are basically the same rattle reel although the Lewandowski's are wider. They both turn effortlessly and come with nice mounting brackets.

I've got Lindell Rattle Reels in my sleeper shack. Honestly don't use them too much. Sometimes a guy has to sleep. wink.gif

I use the Wooden Rattle Reels in our shacks all the time.

We normally use them for walleyes and northerns and they work great.

I mounted mine at about chest height on the wall so they are easy to crank up after you hauled in a fish or pulling up for the night, whatever it maybe. And we never have a issue with people tearing them off or hitting them (Except the one by the door). Then we have a hinge on them so they fold back next to the wall.

The bell that goes around the inside of the wheel is plenty loud too, we normally have the radio or TV on and we can hear it as plain as day.

Its one of those sounds you always look for, like if someone taps it to make a noise you almost instantly jump b/c you think you have a fish. Its fun this way.

Theres nothing better than when sleeping at night and you wake up to the noise of a rattle reel going off!

Well its not a rattle reel but, a friend of mine likes to use those remote controled beepers for his Tip Ups, I've also seen him use them in a sleeper house, talk about wake'n the dead, BEEP BEEEP BEEP BEEEEP, you shure know when you have a bite, I think a guy could rig one of them on the wall with a nice fishing pole and a reel attached to it, that way a guy don't need to do the hand over hand thing. Just a thought... wink.gif

I've got a set up that mounts to the wall & takes a 9 volt battery. When the fish takes the bait down, the buzzer goes off & wakes you up in a stooper! I've got 4 of them in the permanent. I am a very deep sleeper & would miss every fish until I woke up to a huge tangle under the ice.

I have 6 lindells in my ice shack and have had them for 2 yrs now and love them, never had a problem with them once. I bought mine at the ice show and got a pretty good deal when I bought all six at once. They still are a little pricey compared with the ones you find in most stores but they are worth it in my opinion.
