northern mallards

I live West of the twin cities and I'm looking at about 30 mallards on the pond out back that are the bigheaded, big bodied northern Mallards I usually see end of October and November in Northern Minnesota. Maybe just early birds or pushed by the cold in No Dak. Just an update.

Hey leech, I too have seen some very nice greenheads lately. My buddy who is a die hard duck hunter said he felt some of the really nice greenheads they got last weekend may have been northern birds due to the amount of fat on them. I think it's definitely possible with the weather we're having that a few are starting to trickle down.

On another note we were out scouting today and saw a bluebill drake and a hen canvasback. I think maybe a few divers are trickling down too. I just hope we don't get froze out by the first week in November.

I think we're in for a nasty winter and the birds know it.

Over here is SD, we've been seeing some big flocks.

Do you realize how long its been since we've had an actual fall weather pattern and a migration that came through during the season instead of just blasting through here a week after it was over.

Itd be nice to get into some big greenheads. This past weekend all that mallards I shot were young birds besides one hen.

I think your right about the nasty winter coming. Were seeing some northern birds here in Northern WI. There were GWT and widgeon around mon - wed. With some redheads and bills has well.
