0 BillP
You loose something in mounting most transducers to shoot through the hull. But keep in mind that is compairing them to a perfectly alligned transom mount. If you are like me you are always knocking your transducer cockeyed so there is a good reason to think about through the hull mounting. If you do it be sure to do a good job of it and follow the directions for the type of hull you have. Vexilar has a new transducer to fit most sonars that is designed for inside mounting only. Have not heard how they work.
0 Random guy
I run a Stratos boat with the goofy reverse daft shape in the back of the boat. I kept losing signal at higher speeds due to water turbulance until I switched to a shoot through style transducer. What I did to get the angle correct was put the boat in the water under normal cruising speeds, then put an angle finder on the gunwale and remembered the angle the boat was sitting. Back at the garage I used the trailer jack to copy the angle of the boat cruising in the water. After crawling my fat butt into the bilge I epoxied the transducer down using a little level to install it perfectly level to the the rest of the world. It works great a can get a good reading at 60mph and it seems to be just as accurate as my bow mounted unit which has a exterior mounted puck on the trolling motor.
