JerknPerchSD
Lots of light geese are in SD now. Most birds are south of Hwy 34 and most south of Hwy 46. This past weekend while out scouting we saw flocks so large they sometimes covered up more than 1/4 section of land. Mind you the first big push of birds are usually the very smart mature adult birds and are VERY difficult to decoy. The group I hunt with has been out with limited sucess and they run a HUGE spread of 2,500 NW's 300 floaters and 100 HC S&B's. I have mostly been pass-shooting and saving my decoy efforts untill March when most of the birds around are juviniles who decoy much better. I see many of you are planning trips to SD. I may be willing to help with any questions or to show anyone not familiar with the area around, maybe even put a hunt together. Andy -p.s. we killed our first BAND of the year on Sat. JerknPerchSD
Hello there. It is difficult to predict what the birds will do. I have a good feeling they may be here for a while since we have no open water. That being said, if we have 2 weeks of really nice weather, they could be gone too. Also, you may be dissapointed with decoy results, many are. One thing with snows, you gotta have motion. Socks, rags, fliers, are the decoys you want, shells just as fillers. I don't own a snow goose decoy but am lucky enough to have buddies that have a massive spread. This limits me from bringing many people along. Just me going along an accomplishment and I guess not having to make the multi-thousand dollar investment, that is ok. Though not as "highly regarded" I enjoy sneaking or pass shooting (spring light geese only) as much as the next guy. I would be happy to show anyone around hunting like that. I'm available to hunt every day of the week and have tons of land access. I also know the backroads of eastern SD like the back of my hand.
