GPS help - Magellan 310

jjr

Question

I have a Magellan 310 gps that I have not used for about a year. It worked fine in the past, but now when I turn it on, it does not seem to pick up any satelites to allow me to use the navigate/go to functions. None of the sat status icons show they are active. I replaced the batteries and didn't change things. I have turned it on while I'm in the car and nothing gets picked up. Any thoughts on this problem or similar experiences? Do they "go bad" after time? thanks!

jjr,

Your best bet would be to re-initialize the unit. Your GPS may be having difficulty orienting itself relative to your current location. In other words, it thinks it's at point X when you're actually at point Y. If this happens, your GPS will be "looking" in the wrong direction for the satellites. Re-initializing your GPS will give your unit a basic understanding of where it currently is. Once it has this basic information, it should be able to start tracking the satellites.

If you don't have your manual handy, you can get it here (see page 29):

After you re-initialize your GPS, go outside so that you have an unobstructed view of the sky. You should start tracking satellites within a few minutes. If you are not able to pick up any satellite signals, you may have a defective unit.

Good luck!

jjr-

I had the same thing happen to me and there was no way to get it to work. I spent a lot of time on the phone with tech support, ended with me sending the unit into them for a refurbished unit for 35 bucks. No problem since. It started when I hadn't used the unit for over a year and a half. They also offered me an upgrade to a newer unit for a resonable amount more. Let us know what happens- RR4
