It is definitely intended as an open water item, but still something fun to play with in your free time if you're at home on the couch and want to check it out through the app. I do know Vexilar is working on ways to incorporate it into ice fishing too...

The new FISHPHONE will have a lot of ice fishing use though and I'm excited to play with it this winter once they become available!

The intention was to just make people aware of the app that's available as something they might be interested in playing with while at home on the couch. Vexilar is so unanimous with ice fishing that it's always fitting (and habitual) that it's posted in an ice fishing forum.

You are right though, it is intended for open water use and all promotions done via Vexilar are pushing people that way.
