Jason Hamilton
300am came early for 4 souls wanting to extend the ice season. We drove 250 miles in an April snowstorm, past numerous ditched semis and cars. Although there is a general closure in southern MB including Lake Winnipeg, stocked trout are still open and luckily hungry at this time of year. We headed into the Parkland region of western MB and found some silver and gold. All the fish were found cruising large flats near the dropoffs, aggressive tactics worked best, small Lindy Darters and Rattln Flyer spoons in silver worked best. These cruising fish really needed aggressive jigging to bring them in. Then a good deal of finesse to make them hit. We were fishing in shallow water, 3-6' and still caught fish largely die to having Vexilars with 20deg cone angles, without knowing the fish were there, you would not have caught them. Not 1 fish rushed in to slam the bait. Nothing picture worthy for me, but the group caught a few nice ones. With the forecast we could be in for 3 or 4 more weeks of trout fishing on ice!
