MidCoast
I currently have a Silver edition, but want to upgrade. So is the GoPro Hero Black or the Black Plus a better buy? I guess what I want to know is the extra money for the Black Plus worth it?I wanna take a GoPro out and record my ice fishing adventures this winter. MN BassFisher
I film a lot of fishing videos. I filmed the majority of mine with the GoPro Hero 2 and it worked great. I took 2nd in a GoPro Film Festival so I just recently got a GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition sent out to me and it's definitely a step up and has some cool/better features. But I would think your Silver would be great for filming without having to drop more money.
Lusid
Recording your adventure is lots of work. But GoPro is the best available. Contour was on the rise until they sold off and is probably closed for business until further notice.

I enjoy it most of the time, but sometimes I get in a rut and editing sounds like a chore. You need the right mindset. I'm proud of my videos and the way my channel/content has come together over the years.

DTro
I think the content and editing is much more important than the camera you use. I've used nothing but a point and shoot for the past 6 years, and I'm happy with how the vids turn out. I like being able to have it in my pocket and hit GO at a moments notice. 2 million views can't be too bad eh.

I hate watching grainy videos because I don't know what the heck i'm watching if it's blurry. Either way. Make your vids informative and captivating and you won't have any problems gaining views. DTro
Well yeah I agree grainy/cell phone vids are horrible. What I was hinting at is there are a TON of options out there when it comes to cameras that will record quality HD video. Having a nice viewfinder is a big reason why I never went to a Go Pro (Yes I know about the phone app).
Lusid
My video arsenal is something like this when I go out fishing:-Samsung HMX-H300 (bring on nice days, full camcorder)-Contour Roam 2 (waterproof small, no viewfinder comes with me everywhere-iPhone 5-Canon EPLH 300-Flip Mino HD-Creative Vado'sUsually have 2-3 recording devices with me at all times.. because I'm always trying to "capture the moment" lol (WILL IT GO VIRAL?) or (COULD THIS GO VIRAL?) bobbymalone
GoPros have fantastic video, no doubt, but I agree with DTRO.I'd say a gopro's are overkill for most people. They are made for situations where there is some sort of high speed action or when you need a video camera that is mounted somewhere crazy or subjected to extreme conditions. You don't need a waterproof housing, impact resistance, 60 frames per second, etc etc to record your buddy in the ice house. Might be a different story if you want to record going 70 on a snowmobile with the camera mounted at a low angle.Well yeah I agree grainy/cell phone vids are horrible. Those days are pretty much done now. Whatever point and shoot you use has good video. Mine takes good pics but the video is not even close to as good as my cell phone. FISHINGURU
I've been thinking about getting a GoPro for a couple yrs now. I would like to use it for more then just ice fishing. Family vacations, boating, snow boarding, hunting, hiking, biking, ect.

fishnowworknever
Well I just got it, I think I've tried on 1080 and 960(?)Nothing other than that yet...what res. should I be recording on?edit: Sorry for somewhat hijacking your thread... MN BassFisher
Question - what "resolution" do you record on? I usually shoot on 1080P with 48fps. If I know I'm going to slow down a scene a bunch, I will shoot on 60fps (looks way better and smooth when you slow it down)

Family vacations, boating, snow boarding, hunting, hiking, biking, ect. Yes you could use it for taping, but it won't be comfortable to use like a normal hand held camera. The view finder would suck.I really don't understand the rage, other than video taping yourself, or using it for big time action sports. The footage from a camera strapped on your head as your running around a group fishing is difficult, but hilarious viewing at best. Handheld steady shots are much better for viewing and you'll be much happier with an actual handheld camera for your family outings.Canon leads the way in image stabilization currently. If you must, "GoPro" Hero 3 Black. Santa should be blowing last years 3's out soon for around 250 or so.

Which one, my guess is the monster trout from last Spring. Keep up the great work!!!

LMITOUT
I have the hero 3 white...is there ANY easy way to get rid of the fisheye on videos or photos? Select "Medium" in the FOV or Lens View option (don't recall the exact terminology). This will help get rid of the fisheye appearance.I have a Hero2 and you can only select Medium if you use 1080 resolution on that model. Not sure if that has changed with the newer models. The videos turn out a lot better, IMO.The hold and shoot cameras work fine too, but it's hard to beat the hands free capabilities of the GoPro with the different mounting options available. How you intend to capture video will lead to which style fits you the best.
LMITOUT
If you must, "GoPro" Hero 3 Black. Santa should be blowing last years 3's out soon for around 250 or so. I'd get the new "+" model if the money is available. Battery life is said to be better, and GoPro's aren't known for great battery life to begin with. Tom Sawyer
I've never known any good cameraman that doesn't carry at least 2 batteries. If battery life was the only factor to upgrade, that would just plain be foolish! Come on, there is much more to the new models, obviously you are unaware.....
LMITOUT
Obviously you would be incorrect.I simply pointed out that battery life was better than the older model that you mentioned. Not once did I mention that the improved battery was the only factor in buying said model as you implied.
PierBridge
Quote: How you intend to capture video will lead to which style fits you the best. 100 percent correct! What works for DTRO who is stationary for the most part with his catfishing while anchored or sitting in a fishhouse may not work for Mn Bass Fisherman or others who are constantly moving and need the camera mounted on there body along with the many other benefits of the GoPro system. That being said for the most part a simple point and shoot will suffice for most but don't underestimate the endless versatility of the GoPro. Hands free, when doing all them activities I mentioned you don't have free hands or the time to be looking at a screen to see what your recording anyway. The point of the GoPro is to watch what your seeing how you see it, it records what your looking at.Some people in this thread act like no one has ever owned a hand held before. I don't understand the logic of the GoPro on your head being difficult to record what your looking at.I want to see you hand held guys record while snowmobiling, snowboarding, biking, hiking, ect.
