Weighted gauge pressure cooker

Recommended Posts

I have a pressure cooker that has the 3 weights and no dial gauge. I bought it a couple years ago and have canned several times. The question I have is you are supposed to get the weight "jiggling" when you get it up to pressure. I have a hard time doing that. It seems it will build up pressure and blow the top instead of jiggle, the it will sit a minute and blow the top again. I have tried to adjust the heat but cant seem to find the sweet spot. I know your not supposed to adjust the heat too much or you can siphon the jars. I have had success canning in the past but just wondering if I should be concerned.

I did a batch of green beans today for the first time this year. I am using the 15 psi weight. I am sure they are good but wondering if anyone has had the same experience.

That is strange... I have used a canner like that and there was a pretty continuous transition from nothing to jiggling to rattling to really rattling. But it has been a few years so not positive about how it was.

I used to sell this style of pressure cooker (is it a Mirro, Wearever or TFal brand?). It sounds like you might have a leaky gasket. Is steam coming out from around the cover and pan rather than going out the top spout where the weight is supposed to jiggle? If you lose pressure because of a leak, it won't jiggle. The gasket could have dried out and cracked.

It is a Mirro. It keeps pressure but I cant seem to get it dialed in to get the weight to jiggle constantly. It lifts the weight and shoots steam out of the holes in the weight, then it sits back down and a minute it does it again. Maybe I need to just put some water in and practice with it more. I wish I had the one with the dial gauge and the weight although I read the dial gauges aren't accurate.

I think I got it dialed in today. I did another batch of green beans and once it got to pressure I turned the heat down further and actually got the weight to dance like it is supposed to. I think I had the heat too much before. I did have my first jar break though that made a mess. Im glad it was beans and not tomato sauce though. I spent most of the day in the kitchen with all the canning of tomatoes and beans.

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
