Polaris question

Twins 57 Fan

Recommended Posts

I bought a 91 polaris indy sport 440. Needed a little cleaning but all in all it's in great shape. Can anyone tell me what the carb settings for the little screws is supposed to be? Want to get her dialed in before the lakes freeze up.

Thanks in advance.

did you mess with those screws yet? When i clean my carbs i never mess with those, i believe they are the air/fuel mixture. If you already had i would suggest giving a dealer a call or google?
It's ok, if you have cleaned enough carbs you will have taken them out to spray out the body. Just put them back in to the factory spec starting point or turn them in and count the turns and write them down before you take them out. Then just put them back in. I don't think he is getting many people answering back because if they are not sure they don't want to give him a bad answer and have him burn up his sled. I would call a dealer and ask for the starting point of your air/fuel screws on the sled you have as you have suggested, if you forgot to count the turns before taking them out. wink

Generally on a newer sled the small, externally adjustable screws are mostly for idle/very low speed. Risk is minimal here, mostly limited to poor running, maybe fouled plugs.

Screwing around with the jet needle or main jet is more likely to result in a melt down.

I don't know the details of that sled but 1.5 turns out is probably a reasonable starting point.

The settings are printed on a decal under the hood. I have the same sled but it's outside on the trailer covered up or I'd go look. Can I ask what you paid for it. I'm going to sell mine. They are great sleds! Mine runs great...I just got a new one or I'd still be driving the 440.

1.5 out is factory spec "starting point". Sweet spot on our old 91 was 1.0 turn out from lightly seated. Sold that sled in 02 in the big lake area with 9k miles on it. Extremly reliable, never an ounce of trouble with it, and it was road about as hard as a 440 fan could ever be. Wonder if she's still up and running...

edit: and I have always set my Polaris sleds idle at 14-1600....

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
