HardWater9
I am looking for a new place to hunt for some grouse this weekend and give our property a little rest. Has anyone grouse hunted around the foothills? I have heard that it can be some tough terrain so should we bring the wheelers to get around? Thanks for any advice anyone can give me or if they know of a better place in the area and happy hunting!
Pinusbanksiana
First, there is a huge difference between a state park and a state forest. You should do a little reading on it. Second, the Foothill State Forest is on a terminal moraine, which means that a glacier stopped advancing at that particular part of Minnesota, depositing till, which is made up of rock and gravel and sand. The sand washed away as the glacier melted, and in the Foothills case, it washed away to the west, which is why west of the Foothills you see agriculture and jackpine. So, to answer your question, no, leave the "wheelers" at home and hunt grouse the proper way, with a bird dog and boot leather. They taste much better that way. HardWater9
Pinus thanks for the reply and sorry for the mis-step in words. I was more inquiring if there were long trails that would have to be followed to get to public land since many state forests have private land within them. Would definately not trail hunt with a wheeler, bc your right that isnt hunting to me either. But, anyways I found a PRIM on it and have my hunt already mapped out.
