Bambito
I have a 25 horse johnson motor that is slooooowly leaking gear lube from the prop. I brought it to a guy to replace the two seals behind the prop and the darn seals are on backorder till the 18th. Its a really slow leak. Maybe like a drop a day. Anyways we are headed up to rainy lake on friday for a week and was just wondering if its ok to use the motor? He said it should be fine. So I was thinking I would change the lower unit oil before we leave and then maybe midweek pull the boat out of the water and check it. Am I gonna ruin anything by doing this or should it be fine? Also do you think running the motor and it being in the water will speed up the leak? Thanks
huntnfish
I'm no marine mechanic and this is just my opinion but I would think you should be fine. I'd make sure to bring plenty of gear lube. Its not too expensive even if you were to drain it everyday and refill. If nothing else run it a day or so up there and then drain it and see what it looks like. If its kind of milky then you're getting some water in there and might want to change it more often to be safe.
