Twin Cities Muskie Inc to fish below Ford Dam Tuesday July 10. Come fish with us.

Recommended Posts

Millions of muskies have been stocked below the Ford Dam on the Mississippi. Unfortunately, almost all of the fish were stocked as fry. But the area of the Mississippi has some large muskies with two 48 inchers reported last year, and one of our members having caught fish up to 43". With the strong Mississippi currents, we are a group of fisherman who will assess the fishing in that stretch on the evening of July 10. Launch at Hidden Falls (0.8 miles downstream south of the intersection of Ford parkway and East River Road). I'll be there about 5 PM, and will fish until 9 PM. Easiest fishing will probably be in the eddies below the dam. There were five walleye boats there yesterday. There is also a deep hole downstream where the Minnesota enters the Mississippi. I've fished all the way to Downtown St. Paul, and the river has a 55' hole below Robert Street Bridge, but I think the strong current will concentrate fish in eddies rather than holes. I would suggest using lures you don't care much about as retrieving snagged lures is difficult. I will be getting off river about 9 PM, as the skeets can get pretty nasty in this wind-protected canyon. Group will head over to Tiffany Lounge Sports Bar at 2051 Ford Parkway (0.6 miles east, just east of Cleveland on the left side of the road) to catch end of Baseballs All-Star game, eat some grub and grab a cold one.. If you cannot find a spot to park your rig near Tiffany's, take the next right on Kenneth, go two blocks south and take a right on Bohland. Head west until you see the Lumen Christie Church parking lot and your rig will fit there, and it is only a short walk to Tiffany's.

Water is high, but there are several boats on the water daily. Yesterday I saw two small boats go upstream through the locks. Our event is below the dam, and the water near the dam is so fast it is unfishable. There is an island (now a a pair of islands with the high water) about 200 yards below dam that has a nice defined eddy, but I expect most everybody will fish downstream from launch.

Be sure to go to the North entrance of Hidden Falls Park, less than a mile south of Ford Parkway. The South entrance, two miles south of Ford Parkway, (near where highway 5 crosses the river) does not have a boat launch.

Current is strong, especially upstream of the boat launch, but river is eight feet lower than last year at this time. The breaks between current and eddies are well-defined. Remember to wear life jacket and bring lures and leaders you don't care much about, as retrieving snags is difficult in this current.

(a 10 hp may not get you upstream)
