Mid layer or Insulating layer

Recommended Posts

I do mostly stand hunting for Whitetails in the beginning of NOV. and I was looking for recommendations on a good quality mid layer or Insulating layer. I currently have a mil surplus wool shirt and I have several cheap fleeces but I want something that is warmer as I tend to be very cold on the stand. I was looking at the wooltimate and the wind shear items but wanted to get some advice before purchasing.

If it is really cold I wear silk long underwear next to my skin, then polypropylene long underwear followed by a microfleece mid layer. It is a tighter weave than regular fleece and I have found it to be very warm. My jacket has a windshear layer which seems to help. I have heard good things about merino wool, if anyone wears that as a middle layer I would like to hear how it is. Great topic for a 90 degree day!

Wool is my preference. Merino is good if regular wool is too scratchy. On occasion I have gotten wet whether 40 above or 40 below, the inner layer of wool will dry out/keep you warm. Important as hunts don't always go as planned. Combine wool with outer layer that blocks the wind a decent amount and you should stay nice and warm.
