Muskies sense of smell

I am no muskie expert but it is my main pusuit in the summer months. Now me and my buddies have come up with many theories as to why skis will follow and Pike will not, but one that I think holds some credibility is the idea that the fish is trying to "smell" the bait.

What do you guys think?

My buddy actually took a shallow raider and cut a cheese grater in the outline of the lure, then glued the grater on to the bait and then will rub a sucker along the grater part to make the bait smell like a baitfish. Has never caught one on it yet but when he does look for the "Grater" at Thorne Bros.
