Chevy 1500HD

Recommended Posts

I am in the process of buying a new truck. Looking to get a crew cab to haul the family, but also want to be able to haul just about anything needed and get fair mileage. Been looking for a Chevy 1500HD with decent miles so it's been takeing a bit a time. Does any one have one of these trucks and whats your thoughts...likes or dislikes. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

My uncle has a gmc 1500hd with the 4 wheel steer. He loves his truck. It gets about 15mpg highway. He pulls a 28-30ft snowmobile trailer enclosed, with ease. I like the idea of a powerful crew cab 6.5ft box, that gets the mileage of a half-ton. I wish chevy still made these. I would buy one in a heartbeat.

Dont restrict yourself to the 1500 HD. They dont get much better mileage than the 3/4 to 1 ton gas GM's with the 6.0 and haul/ride similar. I would look for the best buy regardless, plus u would have more 3/4 to 1 ton trucks to pick from than just 1500 HDs. just my 2 cents

The 1500HD is the same as the 2500 (not the 2500HD, which is heavier duty). With the 1500HD/2500 you get a transfer case that includes the auto setting (can't get this on 2500HD or 3500). The tranny is the nearly bulletproof 4L80. They are great trucks.

i own a 2007 classic 1500hd. if it is mileage you are concerned about, don't buy it. i get maybe 15 on the highway on a good day. the motor is a 6.0l but it is tuned down compared to the 2500HD or the denali. Dont get me wrong, i love my truck, it tows my 20' boat nicely, just dont expect to tow anything really big and get good mileage.

I own a 2003 1500 HD that I bought new, it now has about 73,000 miles on it. It has been a great truck, the 6.0 pulls my 18 ft boat great, and has towed anything I have hooked to it. This is not the truck you want if your concerned about gas mileage, I get about 10-11 mpg around town and have never hit the 15 mpg mark on a trip, thats not towing anything I should add. The mileage numbers are from the truck computer, I have never checked it on paper. I love the truck, just wish the mpg were better.

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
