95 Camry revisited from April 24 post

Recommended Posts

Back in April I posted a question about a rough running 95 Camry w/189,000 mi. The plugs, dist cap, rotor were replaced then which made a significant improvement. A couple months ago I installed a new egr valve which didn't make a difference. Since the end of April the car has been driven regularly and in fact have put on 8,000 miles. It consistently gets 31-33 mpg hwy but is also consistently not running right. After running 20-40 minutes at 60 mph and slowing down for a reduced speed limit or stop sign it will begin running rough. If it runs at a lower speed for awhile it runs better, but if attempting to accelerate hard without letting it settle at a lower rpm for 5-10 seconds first, it coughs and may kill. It seems if the rpm's stay up (at any speed) it's okay so I downshift when needed to accomplish that. Warmer weather increases the problem, cooler weather decreases it. Yesterday it was 50-60 degrees while running 70-75 (2500-2600 rpm) on I35 and it ran perfect.

Was advised to try replacing the throttle position sensor. The current value of the car doesn't warrant throwing money at experiments and I can live with it, but need to sell the car and few people would likely want it as is.

Any thoughts?

If you look at the other post I had asked if you had replaced the ignition wires! I'm still waiting for a response to that?

I'm not sure why you replaced the egr valve either. if the egr where sticking open ther would be other symptoms that would give you clues as to the egr being at fault. The egr is opened under light to moderate acceleration and steady cruise. It will be closed under hard acceleration and idle. If the vehicle idles normally unplug and cap the vacuum hose to the egr valve then drive it. If the symptom still occurs it's not the egr. If the the symptom goes away than your on the right track.
