Wild Rice

Recommended Posts

Spent some time harvesting wild rice here in White Earth this past week, I took a shot with my cell phone and figured I would share it.

If anyone hasn't tried this before I suggest giving it a whirl, some tough tough work but well worth it in the end!

We were blessed with an awesome crop of rice this year and everyone was grinning from ear to ear at the landings after they came in.

Lots of folks sell their rice green, meaning unfinished. I sold mine green for three days in a row, we were getting anywhere from 400 to 500lbs of unfinished rice in a day.

I plan on going again this weekend to get some for my own consumption, if we go out and get 400lbs that equates to about 200 pound of finished rice ready for the pot!

They call it green when it comes off the lake..Basically just a nickname for unprocessed rice.

The process of finishing it to an edible product is quite the act too. I guess that's why the price is so high on it but it's a great food source nonetheless!!

When I did a lot of work up around Cass Lake Indian Reservation, I would get paid for services quite often in Wild Rice and Maple Syrup that the Members had harvested. It didnt de me much good for money, but results in end were good.

I watched Andrew Zimmern's episode on Minnesota when he went up and helped to harvest wild rice. That was pretty eye opening for the amount of work that goes in to what we eat.

How cool to see your perspective and your harvest! Kinda like me taking photos out of the combine windshield when I'm harvesting corn. smile
