Smartcraft Retrofit Question

Umma Gumma

Question

I just picked up a used Starcraft with a 115 Optimax (2004). I want to upgrade and get a Smartcraft tach. Anyone done this retrofit? Is it worth the cost?

From what I can see some other places, it seems fairly straight forward for some motors and a bit more complicated for others. For what it's worth, my motor has a sticker on the back that indicates it's Smartcraft ready (or something to that degree).

Is it just a matter of getting the tach, getting the wire, and plugging it in to a harness somewhere, with this motor? Is there a parts manual somewhere online that will indicate which parts will work? Would a Mercury dealer provide this information?

Thanks!

I did it on my 04' 115HP OptiMax

Was it worth it? Absolutely - it's nice to know the engine temp, water pressure, RPM's, voltage, hrs and all that good stuff.

What parts to get? Well here is a step by step on what I did, first I familiarized myself with the different tachs and options available with each tach, found exactly what the 04' was capable of doing for me. I then picked up the phone and called in to the Merc Tech Support line, described my setup and what I wanted to achieve, they rattled off the part #'s and I headed out to that giant auction site by the "bay" found what I what I needed and bought it. Doing the math after all said and done I figure I saved about 70% not buying retail.

Good luck - sorry I can't post the part number I got it was a couple years ago now.
