very intermittent overheat on 98 Maxima

Recommended Posts

This is going to be a long shot but I appreciate any help anyone can offer. Sons 98 Maxima with 240K on it has an intermittent overheat. We drove for several hours on Sunday and it popped up after about 2 hours of City driving, but went back down as soon as he put on the heat and stayed down.

I don't think it's the water pump or the thermostat because I expect both would cause consistent and fairly quick problems. I am thinking that it may be a failure of the cooling fan(s) to turn on when the unit gets stressed. We haven't even popped the hood yet (in New York City) and so I don't even know if there is one or two cooling fans. I assume one and I assume it has two settings and that there's a failure on what I will call the high speed setting.

Anyone have any thoughts? Suggestions on how to test for these things? I'm handicapped given the location - would much rather deal with it in White Bear Lake - but he and the car are in NYC and I'm out here for a visit.

Thanks for your help.

Tom

Most cars will run the electric fans anytime the a/c is on. You could do a quick check of the fan operation by running the car with the air on to see if they work. If they do work, try driving with the a/c on and see if the temp stays down. If so, the temp switch for the fan may be the problem.

If the fans dont come on at all, check fan fuses and relays before looking at the temp switch.

Checked it last night and found that there are two fans and both kicked on when the AC was turned on. Drove for 45 minutes in traffic with no problems. Can a thermostat cause an intermittent problem and cause an overheat in the middle of a trip and then be OK again?

Check the front of the radiator (in between the radiator and the condenser) for debris build-up. It is one of the most common problems I see as warmer spring weather starts appearing. Sand, pollen, and the fluffy stuff that floats around in the spring like to accumulate on the front of the radiator. I have a blow gun setup just for blowing out radiators that this happens to. You would be surprised at the sandbox quantity of debris a radiator can hold!

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
