What shell size/shot/oz to use

Recommended Posts

I'm new to bird hunting so my knowledge is nada. I have a gun that can take 3 1/2 inch shell. I bought one case of 3 inch BB 1 1/4oz shells. Wondering if I should buy some 3 1/2 inch shells to have more option? Whats the shell you use during spring goose season? Appreciate any feedback thanks.

I select loads based on a few factors; how tight a pattern I need at a given distance, and size shot I need based on what I'm hunting.

For spring snows, I use tight patterning loads of BB, 1, or 2; all depends on if they are getting down to the decoys or if we are calling the shot at 50 yards.

most days on snows, those 3" 1.25oz BB will get the job done just fine.

Some days you could burn a case of tungsten and still only have a few in the bag.

I have a gun that shoots 3 1/2 inch but rarely shoot anything but 3 inch bb. It is a very good round to use when shooting ducks, darks and snows. Can drop the big boys at a long range and can drop ducks without too much damage that have the landing gear down. Put the shot on target and the birds come down. Nothing wrong with having a few more bb's in the shell using the 3 1/2 but from my experience it is not needed. Good luck

This is easy. A 3 inch shell might get the job done but dangit, you spent the extra money for a 3 1/2 inch gun so use it! Plain and simple! For Canadians all year long pass shootin or decoying(because lets face it, even decoying not all are gonna be inside 25 yds), 3 1/2 Black Cloud BBB is a great shell. For ducks, 3 in 3 shot early in the year, and if your rich, 3 1/2 in 2 shot late season for mallards.
