Salt water question for a MN boat and motor.

This may be a stupid question, but I need advice. What would happen to my Lund 1850 Fisherman with a 135 Optimax if I brought it down the gulf to do a little salt water fishing? How would the water affect it? Would the hull rust out? What about the motor? I know they make a Salt water motor, but for one trip for a week.

Your Lund is aluminum and will corrode....not rust. They make anodes that adhere to your outboard to attract the salt to prevent damage there. Check with your marine dealer to be certain that such use is adviseable.

I guided on the TX gulf coast for a couple yrs. I had a fiberglass boat, non saltwater series engine, aluminum and galv. trailer. After every use without exception I would go thru the carwash and rinse everything completly.

You should have no problems with the engine or the boat. If however you have a painted trailer even a single dip in saltwater can give your trailer a terminal case of cancer the severity of which will be determined by the amount of chips and cracks in the paint.

Saltwater is an evil substance and even stainless steel will be corroded by it. If your boat has any pot metal fitttings they and the trailer will need to be flushed extra good. If you go just remember rinse, rinse, rinse with freshwater!

Many of the saltwater O/talk are indentical the standard models with the exception of decals and in some cases gear ratios on the higher HP models.

all good advise, don't forget to flush the motor!! My grandfather had a small 14' aluminum boat with a 20hp motor. Sure we didn't go out in the gulf with it, but fished the intercoastal which is "brackish water". (salt & freshwater mix). We always washed the boat and flushed the motor. Never a problem. As far as the trailer, I believe it was galvanized, but I am not certain.
