crows and bait

Recommended Posts

this year mostly what ive been using is popcorn, breads and loading my site up with it whenever i bait, and the bears have been just tearing it up. this last time i went to check the site i had 1212 pics and was excited to see what i had coming in since all the bait was gone from the crib including the stuff at the bottom of the log pile so i rebait and head back to the cabin to check the pics out, only to find that all but twenty or so pics were of bears! the crows and coons had cleaned the site out before the bears had a chance, there was pics of the crows and coons coming out from the bottom of the pile to. after going through all the pics it showed the bears coming in the last 4 of the 5 nights about an hour before dark to check for fresh bait so if this keeps up i guess i will just have to shoot quick when one comes in since they were just checking it only to find no bait left. in hopes of keep the crows off i threw cleared brush from when building the site over the logs. hopefully this doesnt effect the bears and keeps the crows off.

bear will eventually abandone a site if the crow crape gets to much, a few things to do is quit with the pop corn, stop the baiting so the crow move on, but so will the bears, Start a ew crib aways away from the po op crib an start fresh, with a scent drag to the new crib. Good luck Boar

We always make our baits with small logs tight enough together that nothing but a squirrel or chipmunk can get through. On top of that we put logs big enough that only a bear can move them. It's a lot more work but far better then having a bear arrive to an empty bait. Also it makes no sense for us to feed the varmints good right before winter and then wonder what happened to the grouse and ducks the next fall.

i also threw a full trailer full of smaller logs on top of the pile to keep the pile tighter. i am heading up tomorrow morning to check baits and i guess i will just have to wait and see and start baiting somewhere else nearby if needed.
