Hood Scoops

Recommended Posts

I wanna put hood scoops on my 1973 dodge charger. Do i need a new hood with cut outs of the shape of the good scoops or do I just cut out the shape my self? I wanna put this one on.

But it says its not functional? Does that me its just for show? It doesnt take in any fresh air?

Where can I find ones that look like that one that actually take in fresh air?

If it's not functional it means that it's not designed to funnel air directly into the air intake/carburetor. Cutting a hole in your hood for this type of hood scoop would just allow the air into the engine compartment and not really help anything. I suppose if you had an open element air filter you might get a little fresh air to the carb...along with squirrels, small birds, and a lot of bugs, but that's about it. smile They are mainly just for looks and attach to the hood with no hole underneath.

"non functional" means just for looks. No hole should be cut other than mounting holes for rivets if you are riveting on.

This is an example of a non functional hood scoop:

Just a lump of fiber glass that looks like a functional hood scoop slapped on the hood. Some cases they are applied via double faced 3M tape. The tuner'z made the popular after Fast & Furious came out. grin Pretty much as LIMT said but do not expect any air flowing of cutting a hole other than just to cut one. wink

If you have a hood that is painted to match your car, in any kind of "good" condition & you want a scoop, I suggest calling & looking around for a poor condition used one or a fiber glass replacement from M.A.S. racing or some where. I would not be using the original hood. Sand down the "scoop" hood, primer, sand and a couple coats of flat-black spray bomb. Cut the hole and mount the scoop or do this before if you fiberglass the scoop.

Good luck!
