Jiffy Ice Auger year and model?

SpecialK

Recommended Posts

My dad found me a deal on a Jiffy so I sent him the money and he picked it up from the guy. I am pretty sure it'll run fine but I was surprised (when I was finally able to see it) that it doesn't have the normal 'd' handles on bothe sides of the power head. It has a matal bracket handle mounted to the top and a bar coming straight off the side of it.

Can anyone tell me what year range this is and what model it might be? Also would like to know if there is a way to put the newer style d handles on this unit?

Thanks as always,

We call them "Knee Breakers", when the auger gets to the break through point when drilling, you have to be careful that the single handle dosen't swing around and take your knee out.

A buddy had one, and more than once he did the "swear dance" when the handle hit him in the leg.

Drilled holes just fine though.

We always called them one arm bandits. The person I bought mine from broke his wrist on it. He had removed the metal arm and forgot it at home so he was using a wooden dowel.

I have one and converted it to the two handles. The first year I called Jiffy and they said they did not have a kit. I told them they should make one and give them away for free before someone gets hurt and sues them.

The next year I called and sure enough they had a conversion kit and all I had to do was pay the shipping to get it. It took an hour or two to install but it was worth it.

Mine was made in the 60's not sure the exact year.

I should add I have used mine for 15 years without any problems so do not worry about it being old.

A few years ago I bought a new auger for it because I wanted the removable blades. You can file or belt sand the blade that is welded to the auger but it is kind of a pain.

Probably not recommended but I use the old auger as a post hole digger when needed. We have really sandy soil so it works okay.

Mine starts well but you have to prime it until gas comes out of the carburetor

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
