There will always be 24 to 48 volts DC for talk battery on a telephone line that is provided from the central office. The gauge of the wire is not the problem but how long will his charger last with the wrong input voltage. There will also be around 90 volts AC but at a very low amp to get your phone to ring. There is very little risk of fire unless he would have something flammable close by and he caused a spark while connecting or disconnecting.

I do not believe this would be illegal, (he's not stealing phone service) but I'd probably check the contract agreement to be sure. The LED light and phone charger are probably about 5 volts with such a small amp draw that the 22 gage wire would be fine. I wouldn't recomend it but I give the guy credit for coming up with the idea.

LOL! Clever idea, and I give him credit for finding a use for the outdated landline.

I just don't see the charger lasting very long being underpowered like that, unless he figured out a way to rewire and change the voltage needed.

... finding a use for the outdated landline.

Dated, maybe, but certainly not outdated. It's about the only service I have with nearly perfect up time, meaning it virtually always works...unlike the Internet and cell phones.

I still need that copper line to run my DSL to my house wink

If you ever get a chance to see the inside of a Central Office ( Where your dial tone comes from ) you would be amazed at the bank of battery's that are there to run the place. All the equipment is made to run on DC voltage and if there is a power outage it will continue to run up to the point the battery's are drained. These are not your group 31 battery's but are around 16"X 16" by 24" and the lead is inside a glass case. More then enough amps to do you in in a heart beat.

    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
