Solo auger handle problems

Whopper Stopper

Question

Has anyone had the handle on your Solo augers break? Seems this may be another problem. I was using mine yesterday and as the auger was boring through the last quarter-to half inch of ice the auger would hang up a little. This coupled with the power the auger generates causes a good snap on the power head. Just as I was finishing my last hole the auger bucked and I held on. The handle snapped at the shock mount on the left handle. I eventually called Strikemaster and they are getting a new handle out to me today. They weren't one bit surprised and even said that this is something that will have to be looked at for next year.

Anyway, just curious how many others have had this problem?

I was talking to my neighbor this afternoon and he told me that Strikemaster has used this same handle for the past five years. It wouldn't surprise me to find I am the only one to snap one off. That would be my usual luck.

Nonetheless I thought it was pretty good how fast they had a replacement on my doorstep. It took me about ten minutes to install the new one.

They got you a new handle the same day you ordered it?

I guess if one drops the auger, the handle may break.

I cut about 35 holes today with my Solo and had no issues with the auger grabing when it cut throiugh the bottom.

I also let Icehousebob use the auger and asked him after he cut maybe 15 holes if it grabed or jerked going through the bottom and he said no.

Might be you have a nick in the blade.

Dont the new Solo's use the same handle as the old ones? I wish they would just put an aluminum or steel handle on them!

the handles are the same as the ones they used with the tecumsehs. they did have metal handles back in the late 80's to the 90's. I have a magIII that is about 20+ yrs old and it still runs like new(metal handle). my brother in law has a mag 2000 that is 12yr old and it also has the metal handle. I think that strikemaster went away from the metal handles as a way to cut down on weight and cost(plastic is cheaper).

    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
