drinving on ice

can 15-17 inches of ice hold a 3/4 ton longbox crewcab chevrolet thanks

For whatever it's worth, I've been driving my 3/4 ton Chev Suburban on 14-18 inches for the past couple of weeks now. I also pulled a 12' metal wheel house last weekend with it across the lake.

I can't imagine my 3/4 ton Suburban is any lighter than your 3/4 ton crewcab.

I would say 'yes' your good to go. But obviously be safe and use your own judgment. As we all know, just because there is 15" in one spot, doesn't mean there is 15" everywhere.

Definately keep the speed down. The one vehicle I have ever seen go through the ice was probably a good 400-500 pounds lighter than ones others were driving in the same area...but they were going noticably faster. And keep the windows open, you can never be too safe on ice!

This is always an interesting question, and seems to get asked a lot. It is an *enormous* liability for someone to say "yeah, go ahead" to this question.

My suggestion (for what it is worth) to this would be to refer to the DNR ice safety chart for their recommendations. I would really hate for some hungry attorney to put the screws to someone over this.

...Because when they break through they'll hire an attorney to hold someone from a public web forum liable? I don't think so.

The internet isn't always the best place for reliable information, especially on forums like this. Everyone has an opinion and this is a topic you don't want to get wrong.

I would spend some time on the MN DNR HSOforum and do some of your own reading and research about the many variables involved when it comes to 'relatively safe' ice. Thickness is just ONE factor of many that you must consider!

Your good on most lakes. If its a lake you don't know make sure you stick to common paths that people have been using and take it slow. It's never fun finding an area with a current underneath.
