Tire chains for my 2 wheel drive

mrscott

Question

I recently acquired a 2 wheel drive chev. I plan on ice fishing like I did last year - except last year I had a 4x4. I would like to know if anyone here has experiences with tire chains: How easy they are to put on and remove at the access.

How well they work.

There are bunch of varieties, which kind?

Thanks

I used chains in the past and they work, but when pushing alot of snow you must keep moving. Once you get stuck do not spin tires as they will auger in to the ice. I would make a trail with a good amount of speed, and then pull house out. Always carry a shovel. Practice putting them on, after you get the hang of it they are fairly simple to put on.

Yea good advice about not to keep spining the wheels if you get stuck. I plowed into a large drift once and kept trying to get out next thing you no tires dug into the ice tell my axle was hung up on the ice. I had to jack my truck up and put boards under the tires not fun.

i used chains on my s-10 the last two years and i could go where my friends silverado could not! just a reminder to keep the chains on pretty tight as i ripped off some trim on the s-10 from them getting loose, but thats why i have that thing as a beater!

I have a 2wd Silverado and when I ordered it I got limited slip differential on it. With a good set of 'V' bar chains I've driven past stuck 4x4s. Just remember, put them on before you get in trouble!! I learned that the hard way. And when putting them on, get them on tight, drive a little and re-tighten them. Then, make a triangle on the outside of the chains with a black rubber bungy. It takes the slap out of the chains when driving. I've used them enough so that I'm pretty quick at putting them on.
