Wiring a truck topper dome light

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I just bought a used topper, got it painted to match yesterday and am planning on wiring the dome light and brake light tonight.

I want to run the dome light "hot" so it will work all the time (headlights on or off). Where do I connect the wire in the engine compartment? Directly to the battery with and inline fuse??? or is there a different place to hook up to? Then just ground the other one to the truck frame? I have had two trucks with toppers in the past but they hooked up the wires for free so I never payed much attention to where they hooked them up.

I will tie the 3rd brake light into the tail light brake wire...any recomendations there? Just use the silicone quick connects?

Thanks much for the information

David

Year, make , and model of the truck.

There may be some more convenient places other than directly to the battery. I couldn't tell you how many GM trucks have come off the hook for a no crank with some accessory incorrectly tapped into a side terminal battery!

Many times there are lugs in the underhood fuse blocks that make it easy to wire accessories. It would be as simple as running a fused power wire from one of these or the battery and grounding to the box/body/chassis or running a ground back to the battery.

There should be a fuse box on the drivers side. There is the small cover that allows access for the fuses/relays. The plastic cover that surrounds the whole thing can also be removed revealing some pretty convenient power access. I think the 06 has it.
