helping sod/seed make it through winter

I close on a new home on the 15th, they've done a final grade and laid sod on the front/sides and a small stretch of the back of the house. The rest is seed covered with hay, and it looks like they still have a small corner that will be sodded.

Can anyone provide me with advice to make the most out of their work? We have a 1.5 acre lot, of which they probably covered 1/3 of an acre in either sod or seed. I'm thinking about laying down more seed before the end of the month to expand the yard a little further.

I can't really do anything until we close, I'm not sure what they've been doing other than water it but I want to make sure I don't have to start from scratch next year... Should I be looking at throwing down a fertilizer?

If the landscapers did it right, they put down a starter fertilizer with the sod.

Keep the water to it as much as you can, this rain will help.

Other than that, there's a good chance you'll have to reseed the bare spots in the seeded part.

The worst thing that can happen for you right now would that seed start to germinate, then get a hard freeze and kill the new young grass.
